Bohócsapkás önarckép (Self-Portrait in a Fool’s Cap)
Bohócsapkás önarckép (Self-Portrait in a Fool’s Cap) is a 1921 oil self-portrait by György Rauscher, held at the Komáromi Klapka György Múzeum. Painted before his turn to New Objectivity, it is the image Számadó’s 2019 monograph takes for its cover.
The painting is a head-and-shoulders self-portrait of the painter at about nineteen, grinning openly beneath a soft greenish fool’s cap and above a white ruffled clown collar. The face is flushed and lively, warmly lit against a dark ground, and the paint is loose and high-spirited. It is signed and dated at the lower right.
It belongs to the early works that predate the 1935 estate catalogue, made in the manner of his student years before the closed, cool New Objectivity portraits of the mid-1920s (see /biography/training).
