Halotti tor (Funeral Feast)
Halotti tor (Funeral Feast), also recorded as Asztal körül (Around the Table) and Tor (Wake), is a 1927 oil painting by György Rauscher, number 22 in the 1935 estate catalogue. It is one of the works rediscovered in a Bratislava cellar and shown at Esztergom in 2015 (see /rediscoveries).
The painting gathers four figures around a white-clothed table: a young woman seated at the left with her head bowed, a gaunt man in a dark suit beside her, a third man leaning in behind the table, and a fourth standing at the right with a plate in his hands. On the table are a green bottle, green glasses, white plates, and cutlery; an empty wooden chair stands in the foreground. The palette is muted and earthen, greens and browns against the pale cloth, and the mood is sober and grieving.
It belongs with the night-world scenes of his Hungarian years, of passion and mourning, alongside Apacstanya and Jazz-band (see /biography/hungarian-years).
