Önarckép (Self-Portrait), 1925
Önarckép (Self-Portrait) is a 1925 self-portrait by György Rauscher, worked in brown ink and wash.
It is a head-and-shoulders self-portrait of the painter at about twenty-three: the dark hair and the deeply shadowed eyes are built up in fluid brown washes over a pale ground, the head turned a little to one side and the mouth set. The handling is loose and direct.
It belongs with the run of self-portraits Rauscher made through the 1920s (see /biography/hungarian-years). The 1935 estate catalogue lists a 1925 Önarckép in tempera as no. 16 (not located); whether the wash self-portrait reproduced here is that work is not established.
