Páholyban I (In the Box I)
Páholyban I (In the Box I) is an oil painting of about 1926-1928 by György Rauscher, held at the Magyar Nemzeti Galéria in Budapest. It is number 58 in the 1935 estate catalogue, the first of a pair (the second, Páholyban II, is known only from the 1935 installation photographs).
Two elegant women lean on the red front of a theatre box: one facing out, with an auburn bob, pearls, and a pale wrap; the other in profile beside her. A pair of opera glasses rests on the red ledge, and the lower ground is a warm ochre. The handling is soft and washy.
It is one of the society subjects of Rauscher’s later Hungarian years, on the threshold of the art-deco world he would develop in Berlin (see /biography/hungarian-years).
