Szerelmespár (Lovers)
Szerelmespár (Lovers), recorded in the 1935 catalogue as Csók (The Kiss), is a 1927 painting by György Rauscher, number 11 in that catalogue. It is one of the works rediscovered in a Bratislava cellar and shown at Esztergom in 2015 (see /rediscoveries).
A couple embraces and kisses: the fair-haired woman at the left, her eyes closed and her hand against the man’s face, and the dark-suited man whose arm encircles her. It is worked in soft grey-green washes, nearly monochrome, the forms dissolving at their edges. It is signed at the lower left.
It belongs with the night-world scenes of his Hungarian years, of passion and romance (see /biography/hungarian-years).
