Study for the Portrait of Szomory Dezső
The study for the Portrait of Szomory Dezső is a 1927 work by György Rauscher, held at the Petőfi Irodalmi Múzeum in Budapest (ltsz. 69.135.1). It is an oil on canvas, 100 × 80 cm; the monograph labels it tanulmány (study).
It carries the same composition as the finished painting: the writer seated with a monocle, holding a small black lapdog, in a greenish jacket with an ochre tie. Here the figure is set against a plain tan ground rather than the finished work’s vivid interior, and the whole is more loosely and rapidly worked.
The finished portrait, in the Magyar Nemzeti Galéria, is at Szomory Dezső portréja, and the sitter at /sitters/szomory-dezso.
