Untitled (woman's portrait) by György Rauscher

György Rauscher, untitled woman's portrait (presumably a magazine illustration), c. 1928-1930. Public domain.

Untitled (woman’s portrait)

An untitled watercolour portrait of a woman by György Rauscher, the subject not identified.

A young woman with dark, centre-parted hair gathered in low coils, blue eyes and red lips, wears a blue dress with a white collar and cuffs; one hand is raised toward her shoulder, the other rests on a pink block. It is worked in soft watercolour washes and signed at the lower right.

It is one of two undated female portraits that Számadó reproduces together as Rauscher’s, presumably magazine illustrations of his Berlin years; it was of pictures of this kind that the critic Fóthy János wrote his much-quoted line about work running “a hair from fashionable kitsch” (see /biography/berlin-years). The companion is at /works/female-portrait-dark-bob.
