Öltönyös férfi kaktusszal (Man in a Suit with Cactus)
Öltönyös férfi kaktusszal (Man in a Suit with Cactus), reproduced in the monograph under the shorter title Férfi kaktusszal, is a signed oil of about 1928 by György Rauscher. It was among the works rediscovered in a Bratislava cellar and shown at Esztergom in 2015 (see /rediscoveries).
The painting is a full-length portrait of a man standing in a brown suit and bow tie, his hands clasped before him, against a flat blue wall with a white door at the left and a framed picture above. A potted green cactus sits on a pale pedestal at the right. The forms are firmly drawn and the colour bold and flat, in the manner of his New Objectivity. It is signed at the lower left.
The cactus-and-sitter motif belongs to the international New Objectivity, and recent saleroom literature has linked it to painters such as George Grosz (see /methodology on the archive’s use of auction-house material). It is a different work from the catalogue’s Ülő nő kaktusszal (Seated Woman with Cactus, no. 6) and from the Férfi portré of 1927.
