Self-Portrait by György Rauscher (1928) - Magyar Nemzeti Galéria, Budapest

György Rauscher, Önarckép (Self-Portrait), 1928. Magyar Nemzeti Galéria, Budapest.

Önarckép (Self-Portrait), 1928

Önarckép (Self-Portrait) is a 1928 oil painting by György Rauscher, held at the Magyar Nemzeti Galéria in Budapest. It is number 62 in the 1935 estate catalogue.

The painting shows the painter at about twenty-six, standing three-quarter length in a dark blue suit with a white collar and dark tie, against a yellow-green ground, with sprays of green leaves at the upper right and a window frame at the right edge. The eyes are deeply shadowed, the face pale and narrow, and the figure is drawn in the closed, cool New Objectivity manner he had by then made his own.

In his self-portraits Rauscher tended to present himself as a bourgeois or intellectual rather than as a working painter; at least six were shown at the 1935 estate exhibition (see /biography/hungarian-years).
