Pálffy-Daun Józsefné grófné portréja (Portrait of Countess Pálffy-Daun)
Pálffy-Daun Józsefné grófné portréja (Portrait of Countess Pálffy-Daun) is György Rauscher’s last completed painting, made in 1930 at the Pálffy-Daun estate near Bicske, shortly before his death. It is number 63 in the 1935 estate catalogue.
The sitter is Countess Klára Anna Fáy de Fáj, a Hungarian noblewoman; the identification, and the correction of the monograph’s “English-born” description, are set out on her page (/sitters/klara-fay-de-faj). Her photograph had appeared in Sport im Bild in December 1928, so the working sequence may have run from a photo seen in Berlin to the live sitting in Hungary.
The painting is known to the archive only from a period photograph, in which it appears as a full-length portrait of the countess in a long, dark evening gown, photographed in a picture-hung interior. A clean reproduction of the canvas itself has not been located.
It is the last work of the life told in /biography/final-months-and-afterlife.
